Psychology Fellowships
overview
Psychology fellowships are available for graduates of PhD, EdD and PsyD programs in Clinical, Counseling, or Educational Psychology starting Sept. 2012. Applicants are required to have completed a full year (1,500 clinical hours) of pre-doctoral internship and must be in a position to have completed all graduation requirements, including their dissertation by August 2012.
There are three programs at Children’s Hospital Oakland offering fellowships opportunities for the coming year.
Psychology Fellowship Goals:
- Provide more intensive and specialized training at an advanced level in the specialty area of placement, which may include parent-infant work, child-clinical and/or pediatric psychology.
- To develop competent, effective child and family therapists with expertise in the pediatric and urban community setting.
- To expose trainees to a wide range of psychological, developmental, behavioral pediatrics, and family systems issues in the context of a children’s healthcare system.
- To develop clinicians knowledgeable about multicultural issues and sensitive to working with families from a variety of cultural, socio-economic and gender backgrounds.
- To develop familiarity with the medical treatment of children and with the uses of psychotropic medication, where appropriate.
- To develop the ability to work comfortably and effectively within a treatment team which includes physicians, school and community personnel.
- To enhance skills in working collaboratively with the many systems that interface with the mental health system in the care of children including foster care, schools, the courts, county mental health and social services.
- To enhance and deepen a meaningful professional identity as a psychologist.
Psychology fellows work with more challenging patients, assume a higher level of responsibility appropriate to their level of skills, and are assigned roles more advanced and/or specialized than psychology interns. For example, depending on the program, psychology fellows might have such duties as consultant to specialty clinics, consultation-liaison to particular in-patient units, on-call duties, etc. Fellow have access to a range of didactic seminars, case conferences, training experiences and hospital-wide events.
Each program offers different specialized services, different training experiences and different emphases. For example, ages of patients served, typical diagnoses of patients treated and treatment approaches will vary by department/service placement.

As with our internships, our fellowships are paid positions, and include vacation, health and dental benefits. The deadline to apply is Feb. 2, 2012, although late applications may be accepted if positions remain available after the uniform notification date of March 14 2012.

Readiness for Fellowship
All Psychology Fellows must have completed all requirements for
graduation from
an APA-approved or CPA-accredited
doctoral programs by the starting date of the
fellowship. This is defined as having the diploma in hand on the first
day of Fellowship, or a letter from their Director of Graduate Studies
verifying the completion of all degree requirements pending the
institution's graduation ceremony. Completion of all degree/graduation requirements is necessary so that the Fellow can successfully apply for Registered Psychologist status from the Board of Psychology before starting Fellowship training
and/or to meet the requirements of our CAPIC member Postdoc programs
.
Upon acceptance of our initial Fellowship offer, the applicant will
also be required to provide a letter from her/his dissertation chair verifying the applicant's ability to meet the above completion requirements by the last week in August.
