Psychology Training Opportunities
Overview
A strong education and teaching program is integral to the mission of Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland. In addition to its outstanding programs for pediatric residents, social work interns and other professional groups, Children's Hospital has long offered training programs for psychology interns and psychology fellows. These programs allow us to provide excellent care to our community today, as well as to develop top-notch professionals to serve the healthcare needs of tomorrow.
Our 191-bed pediatric hospital and specialized outpatient services provide an ideal setting for psychology training at the graduate and post-graduate level. We employ over 30 licensed psychologists in a wide range of departments and services, including: Early Childhood Mental Health, the Autism Clinic, the Behavioral Emergency Response Team, Hematology/Oncology, school sites, the Pediatric Consultation Service, a variety of outpatient clinics, and programs serving specialized populations such as children in foster care, homeless families, etc.
The Psychology Internship and Fellowship programs provide a year of intensive training in evaluation, treatment and consultation at a level appropriate to the trainee’s skills and experience. We are dedicated to developing the diagnostic and psychotherapeutic skills of trainees who are committed to working in an urban pediatric and community setting serving children and families. We are particularly interested in students who demonstrate an interest in serving a diverse, multi-ethnic, predominantly low-income population. Because we serve a multicultural, multi-lingual population, applicants who are fluent in a second language are encouraged to apply.
We offer training to graduate students and post-graduate students of accredited doctoral programs (PhD, EdD or PsyD) in clinical, school or counseling psychology. The Department of Psychiatry has offered internship and fellowship training to doctoral-level trainees for more than 25 years. In recent years, our many hospital programs have expanded to include training in a number of the more specialized outpatient programs.
We are pleased to announce that we are now offering a hospital-wide integrated Psychology Internship program. This will allow trainees to experience a broader range of didactic and experiential learning from our very talented team of child, family and pediatric psychologists throughout our institution, while having the advantages of a “home base” in one of our primary placement settings.
We offer the following training programs:
- Psychology Internships (Pre-doctoral level)
- Psychology Fellowships (Post-doctoral level)
- Practicum Placements (Pre-internship level)
Psychology training stipends
Stipends are available for psychology interns and psychology fellows. In past years we have offered stipends in the range of $20,000 to $30,000 annually. Stipends for 2008-09 will be announced when hospital budgets are finalized. We offer an excellent package of health, vision and dental insurance to our trainees as well as their dependents, with no share of cost.
We do not have stipends or benefits available for Practicum students.
