Hasani calls Yokeisha his sister. They have known each other for years, and both come to Children’s from a good distance away: Hasani lives in Sacramento and Yokeisha is from Stockton. They share the same serious disease – sickle cell – and also the danger of its complications, such as severe pain, organ damage and iron overload. The day we took this picture both of them were here for pain management. Teenagers with a chronic illness face many challenges, and nobody understands this better than other teenagers. Meeting friends at Children’s who share the same experiences is a gift.
Some blood disorders, such as sickle cell anemia, thalassemia and aplastic anemia can be treated by hematopoietic (blood) cell transplantation at our Blood & Marrow Transplant Center of Excellence. Certain malignancies, such as leukemia, as well as selected metabolic storage disorders and genetic immunodeficiencies may also respond to transplantation. The diagnoses we treat include:
• Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia
• Acute Myelogenous Leukemia
• Blackfan-Diamond Anemia
• Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia
• Histiocytic Disorders
• Hodgkin's Lymphoma
• Hereditary Erythrocyte Abnormalities (i.e., thalassemia, sickle cell disease)
• Inherited Immune Systems Disorders (i.e., severe combined immunodeficiency disorder, Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
• Inherited Platelet Abnormalities
• Metabolic/Storage Disorders (i.e., Hurler's syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy disorder)
• Myelodysplastic Disorder Syndrome
• Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
• Other Leukemias (JMML)
• Other Malignancies (i.e., some solid tumors such as neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, brain tumors)
• Other Non-Malignant Diseases
• Severe Aplastic Anemia
