Children's Hospital Autism Intervention (CHAI)

TEAM, REGISTRATION, AND VOLUNTEERING

The CHAI Team

CHAI's interdisciplinary team includes a psychologist, a behaviorist, a speech and language therapist, and an occupational therapist under the direction of clinical director Mimi W. Lou, PhD. The interdisciplinary tem members also train and supervise tutors who provide a portion of the services.

Registering for CHAI

CHAI is designed for children aged zero to 3 years who may fall on the Autism Spectrum. Due to the benefits of early intervention, children should be under 32 months of age when they begin the program. Children are brought into the program through referrals from the Regional Center of the East Bay (RCEB). The RCEB phone number is (510) 383-1200.

Volunteering with CHAI

CHAI is a year-round program whose success depends largely on the participation of volunteer tutors. Tutors will be trained and supervised to engage with individual children through structured teaching approaches and developmental play and interactions.

Students in any field may apply if interested in working with this population. No experience required, although experience with children is helpful. We are especially interested in volunteers willing to make a year-long commitment of at least 10 hours per week, including time for a weekly seminar/group supervision.

New tutors are invited to join the program at the start of each semester. Class credit is a possibility. Please contact Program Coordinator, Michelle Suwczinsky, for more information.

CHAI is located at 645 Fourth Street, Oakland, CA 94607, near Jack London Square. For further details, please contact CHAI Program Coordinator, Michelle Suwczinsky at (510) 428-3792.
