Experience being a doctor or nurse!
Are you interested in practicing medicine, becoming a physician or pursuing a career in nursing?

FACES Summer Medical Academy and Summer Nursing Academy are short, intensive educational programs that provide youth (15 years and older) with unique opportunities to explore the world of medical/nursing training and practice.

FACES programs are designed to inspire young people to become caring, insightful physicians, nurses, or medical professionals and to understand the particular complexities of practicing medicine in a diverse and often challenging world. Founded by Tomás A. Magaña, MD, MA, FAAP, a physician in the Division of Adolescent Medicine at Children’s Hospital Oakland, FACES has successfully prepared Bay Area youth for careers in the health professions for the past nine years

Program Details:
Participants in either academy have an opportunity to:

  • Learn clinical skills
  • Interact with medical professionals from a variety of clinical areas
  • Explore the ways in which illness affects patients and their families
  • Gain insights about medical practice that will inspire and motivate them to pursue medicine as a career
  • Develop a network of friends and professionals

Both academies feature workshops lead by Children’s Hospital staff, physicians and local experts.

FACES Summer Medical Academy
The Summer Medical Academy program gives participants two weeks of educational opportunities and hands-on activities simulating life as a medical student and physician.

  • Date: JULY 11-22
  • Program Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM
  • Tuition: $1,800 (covers program materials, field trips transportation, daily breakfast & lunch)

Workshops and activities include:

  • Suturing, intubation and immunization workshops
  • Vitals workshop
  • Gross anatomy lab
  • Guest speakers, including clinicians and patient panels
  • Clinical case studies
  • Field trips

FACES Summer Nursing Academy
The Summer Nursing Academy program offers participants two weeks of educational opportunities and hands-on activities related to the profession and practice of nursing.

  • Date:  TBD
  • Program Hours: Monday - Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM
  • Tuition: $1,800 (covers program materials, field trips transportation, daily breakfast & lunch)

Nurses perform a wide range of clinical and non-clinical functions necessary to the delivery of health care, and may also be involved in medical and nursing research. Nurses, in collaboration with other members of a health care team, are responsible for the treatment, safety, and recovery of ill individuals, health promotion and treatment of life-threatening emergencies in a wide range of health care settings.

Workshops and activities include:

  • Suturing, intubation and immunization workshops
  • Vitals workshop
  • Gross anatomy lab
  • Guest speakers, including clinicians and patient panels
  • Clinical case studies
  • Field trips

Program Qualifications:

FACES Summer Medical Academy and Summer Nursing Academy seek applicants who are:

  • Motivated, responsible, high-achieving students
  • 15 years or older (including 1st & 2nd year college students)
  • Genuinely interested in learning about a medical career
  • Willing to participate fully in a unique learning experience.

FACES Summer Academy programs are open to any race/ethnicity, school or geographic area. College students may apply, but the majority of participants are high school students.

How to Apply:

To apply to attend a FACES Health Professions Academy, download the application below or request an application by calling the FACES office.

Applications must include:

  • Letter of recommendation (1 letter from a teacher)
  • $25 processing fee

All applications must be submitted by 5 PM on April 5, 2010. We regret that the Academy is currently unable to offer financial assistance to students.

Application Review Process

Applications are reviewed in the order they are received, and qualified students will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. We accept approximately 30 students per each summer program.  Late applications are not accepted.
