How do I get an appointment?
Most insurance plans require a referral form from your pediatrician. Once we have the insurance go-ahead, you can call (510) 428-3333 for an appointment. If your pediatrician feels your child needs to be seen right away, please call us to discuss the case. We might decide to start some tests in advance of the appointment, or schedule an earlier appointment.
What will happen at the first appointment?
We will take your child’s medical history — and talk a lot to get to know your child. We'll give your child a full physical exam that may include a rectal exam, and we may draw blood for tests. Please bring all previous test results, a copy of your child’s growth charts, and any x-rays to save time during the visit. Children’s Hospital’s gastrointestinal team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, social workers and nutritionists.
Your child may be seen at the beginning of the visit by a nurse practitioner, a specialist in training, or an attending physician. The attending physician will examine your child, take further history if needed, and consult with these other professionals. The physician will then discuss with you the team’s recommendations for your child.
Should my child fast for the visit?
No, please feed your child normally. In fact, bringing a snack and entertainment is a good idea.
Can I talk to the doctor without bringing my child?
Your child must be present and examined at all visits for us to provide the best medical care. If you wish to speak to the doctor in private, before or after the visit, please let the doctor or our receptionist know, and we’ll be happy to arrange it.
