Research
Current projects include research into the heritability of strabismus and a clinical evaluation of chemodenervation (Botox therapy) versus standard surgery for the correction of strabismus. We are also participants in the phase I clinical trial of enzyme replacement therapy for mucopolysaccharidosis type VI.
Staff
Our physicians are board-certified and subspecialty trained. Interpreters for many languages, a financial counselor, and a social worker are available to assist our patients.
T. Otis Paul, MD
Director, Pediatric Ophthalmology
Dr. Paul received an MD degree from UCLA Medical School. He completed a residency at San Diego Naval Hospital and a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.
Dr. Paul has conducted lectures and scientific presentations worldwide on strabismus and other genetic ophthalmic conditions, and is the author of 15 research papers and textbook chapters. Dr. Paul was the recipient of the Resident’s Teaching Award from the California Pacific Medical Center in 1992; the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Honor Award in 1995; the American Academy of Ophthalmology Honor Award in 1998; and the Top Doctor Award from San Francisco magazine in 2001.
Selim T. Koseoglu, MD
After earning an MD degree in his native Turkey, Dr. Selim completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at Indiana University Medical Center and at Riley Children’s Hospital; and a residency in pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital. He has the Halide Edip Adivar award from Robert College, second place at Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, and resident research award from Indiana University Department of Ophthalmology for his work on the use of polydiaxinon in the prevention of adhesions in strabismus surgery. He formed the Pediatric Ophthalmology division in Istanbul Surgery Hospital and contributed to the performance of strabismus surgery in Bosnia after the war.
Tina M. Chou, MD
Dr. Chou earned her MD degree from UCLA School of Medicine. She completed her Ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA Medical Center. She also completed her fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus at Jules Stein Eye Institute.
She has held academic positions at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and at the State University of New York, before joining the staff at Children's Hospital of Oakland. She has performed research in developmental anatomy of the eye, infantile esotropia and adult strabismus.
